Arousal Regulation: How Music Changes the Way Hard Exercise Feels

Published in Psychological Bulletin, the most prestigious review journal in psychology, this 2020 meta-analysis represents the largest and most rigorous quantitative summary of music and exercise research ever conducted. Drawing on 139 individual studies involving 3,599 participants, the authors calculated 598 separate effect sizes across four outcome categories: psychological responses, physiological responses, psychophysical responses, and performance outcomes.

The headline findings are unambiguous. Music listening during exercise consistently produces more positive emotional states, reduces perceived exertion, improves physiological efficiency, and enhances performance output across a broad range of physical activities. The effects hold across different sports, fitness levels, and demographic groups.

The paper's particular contribution is its quantification of the psychological mechanism at the centre of music's benefits: arousal regulation. Music modulates the central nervous system's activation level, and when the emotional tone and tempo of the music matches the current physiological state of the athlete, the same objective workload is experienced as measurably less demanding. The authors are also candid about the limits: music's ability to reduce perceived exertion diminishes beyond the anaerobic threshold, and mismatched music can be counterproductive. The implication is pointed. The benefit of music is real and substantial, but it is entirely dependent on selecting the right track for the right moment. A static playlist cannot do that. Adaptive selection can.
